How I Moved to France
I can't remember a time in my life when I didn't dream about living in France.
As a child, I traced my fingers over maps of Paris. Imagined climbing the Eiffel Tower– counting each step. I wondered what it would be like to walk on cobblestone streets beneath my feet.
I took French classes and studied French late into the night. I practiced making croissants in my classic American kitchen in small town America.
On my first trip to Europe, Paris was my first stop. I stayed in the tinest hotel room, in which the small bed took up nearly the entire room.
As I got older, I visited Quebec City as often as I could. It was the closest I could get to French language and culture.
Then everything shifted.
I roadtripped through the South of France. Then I spent a month in Paris solo with my children. I then started spending more and more time in France.
The idea of life in France felt necessary, but it seemed impossible. I simply didn't think it would ever be possible to actually live in France.
Then the day arrived.
I learned that ordinary people, like myself, could apply for a French visa to live, work, or study in France.
That was it! It was time to apply for a French visa.
I was determined to build a new life in France. I was committed to the idea of learning French, finding my French roots, and exposing my children to life in France.
I made a plan, took the leap, and bought the ticket.
At first, I didn't fully dive. I rented different places and took time building a base. Then I leaped and got really serious.
The dream that lived in my head for so long finally became an everyday reality.
I did this.
And you can, too.
